Why does Hester move outside of the city after her release from prison?

Hester moves into a cottage outside the city because she would not have been welcome in town. Living on the outskirts gives her the opportunity to make a living, but it also gives her the chance to blend in.... for people to become accustomed to her presence and to eventually know her for the woman she really is.
