A large part of Hawthorne's intent (if we are so bold as to surmise it) is to show how dreadful unconfessed sin is. It has disastrous effect, and Hawthorne's Protestantism is in this sense reminiscent of Luther's intense struggle with sin and its stranglehold of man.
