No, it's tragic and perfect. Dimmesdale and Hester are both Job-like innocent sufferers. Hester gets to go on all the wiser while Dimmesdale pays for his silence.

By Job-like I am referring to the Old Testament Book of Job. Both Dimmesdale and Hester really didn't do anything that sinful (at least that others weren't doing behind closed doors). Both suffer and bear a cross. Dimmesdale, however, kept his silence which destroyed him in the end even though he did finally tell all.
