Contrast Lady Blakeney in the early chapters of this novel with Lady Blakeney as she is described at the conclusion of Chapter 19, as she sets off from Richmond. Explain how her character has changed and how the reader’s perception of her character has changed.

In Chapter Nineteen, we see Lady Blakeney without her mask for the first time. Rather than the cold, unemotional woman, we met early on in the novel, we see a woman who is frightened for herself, her future, her marriage..... and her husband. Instead of hiding from her husband behind an icy exterior, she bares her heart and finally reveals things she never should have hidden in the first place. In turn, we as readers, warm to her character.
