How does Percy and Marguerite’s individual pride almost destroy their lives?
How does Percy and Marguerite’s individual pride almost destroy their lives?
Over the course of the novel, Percy and Marguerite face many trials as a couple. Unfortunately, most of their trials and misunderstandings are rooted in pride and the refusal to understand the other's perspective. Percy is angry at Marguerite because of her part in denouncing the Marquis de Cyr and is family at the tribunal. Marguertie, however, though tricked into her denouncment will do anything to save her brother, who she believed is in danger.
Percy, like his wife, keeps secrets. She has no idea that her husband is the Scarlet Pimpernel.... no idea that he is at all interested in the politics of the day. He shares nothing.... nor does Marguerite. It's as if the couple erected a boundary that neither will cross. This bounday serves as the biggest challenge of all, creating suspicion and turmoil.
