Does any character or scene remind you of anything or anyone?

This novel is so far out of my own personal experience. I understood, a little, Lily when she saw the picture of the Black Mary. I had been exposed to religion and of course churches growing up. I recall, as a child, wondering why Mary and Jesus were always portrayed as white. Really they shouldn't have been white, considering the area they came from. I wondered why Mary or Jesus couldn't be black or brown or even olive-like? That's the closest I can come to relating to an experience in this book.
