Yes, Lily has many special feeling for the bees. Early in the story August questions her about her favorite things, what she loves, and Lily answers that bees are at the top of her list. The bees symbolize movement for Lily; they symbolize growing up and leaving one thing behind while moving forward to the next. Bees inspire Lily. They are a female based community where the young take care of the mother; they're hard workers, and they have an innate ability to survive........... just like Lily.
