Secret life of bees novel, chapter 3
Lily arrives in Tiburon. She describes it as "a place like Sylvan, minus the peaches." She also describes a "Confederate flag inside the mouth of their public cannon." The Confederate flag, of course, is the symbol of the white south and a reminder of black slavery. Fort Sumter was where the original battle of the civil war took place. The quote insinuates that although race relations are changing in America, the white pride of the South will never go away.
