What is a black bee with white diagonals on either side of body?

I was clearing some long weeds, a black bee with white diagonals on either side of its body stung me. It didn't leave a stinger, but was very painful. Is this a bumble bee? If not what was it. It was shaped somewhat like a bumble bee, not a wasp. There were several of the same type flying quickly around me, until I backed away. I did not see a nest. Thanks for your help.
