Why is Lily unable to touch the Our Lady of Chains statue?
At first Lily couldn't touch the statue. It's not because she couldn't but she didn't why?

Lily wasn't a part of the women's ritual- the dancing and touching of Mary's heart...... so when Lily went to touch the statue, June stopped playing the cello and Lily stopped the motion....... there wasn't anything wrong with her touching it, but obviously not everyone was comfortable enough with Lily, namely June, who was later chastized by August for being a poor hostess.
