In order to answer this question, we have to keep in mind Kierkegaard's three spheres of existence: the aesthetic, ethical, and religious. Aesthetic, in this sense, does not mean "beautiful" in the classical sense. Instead, it means a life dedicated to immediate pleasure. Erotic desire is therefore the most powerful manifestation of the aesthetic life.
