Wolff has two old canoes, Edek and Ruth have each had some experience with canoeing, so they each take charge of one canoe. They float downstream with the current, but the moon makes them visible from the banks of the river. A soldier jumps in the water to try to stop them tugging a paddle away. Shots fired from the bridge but they make it out.
