What happened to Edek?

Edek was caught for smuggling and sent to a prison farm in Germany. The work was difficult, and he tried to run away, but was always caught. When the war turned against the Nazis, he hid under a train’s cattle wagon and held on. After awhile, he was dizzy, bumped up and down, splashed, and eventually frozen into ice. Finally, the train crossed the frontier into Poland and Edek cried out. He was released and thawed out.
