In context, we might say the author, Geothe, sees Werther (his creation) as unmotivated, without direction, and extremely self-centered. He is unable to see the world, and he thinks the world revolves around him. Over the course of the story, we'd like to sympathize, and yet, Werther's actions and words leave most without sympathy.
