Although Kyd's characters may call on Heaven for assistance, Heavenly agents never appear in the play. The supernatural characters
who actually appear come from another place altogether..... the Underworld. Kyd depicts Pluto, Proserpine, the three judges of Hades, in addition to the strange creature called Revenge. Christ (God) or the saints that Hieronimo believes have blessed his plan for revenge are not present. In essence, it's as if the infernal powers have taken over. As a result, Kyd's play is perceived as a work of "dark pessimism," except for the fact that the innocent Alexandro survives.
