The Stranger
considering the cases presented by both the deffense and prosecution ,doyou think meusalt should be given the death penalty?
in part 2 chapter 4 the prosecuter and his lawyer are trying to prove whether meursault is guilty or not

Actually, they both already acknowledge his guilt, but the defense is trying to explain what happened (the why of the murder). Do I think the punishment was just? Well, in my OPINION........ yes. Meursault's character admittedly belies itself as he evolves throughout the novel, but his actions are cold and detached none-the-less. His disrespect for life cannot be ignored......... no one can be sure that what had happened would never happen again........ I can read this today and say "give the man life in prison," but at the time this was written I would have supports the verdict and its ensuing punishment.
