Actually, they both already acknowledge his guilt, but the defense is trying to explain what happened (the why of the murder). Do I think the punishment was just? Well, in my OPINION........ yes. Meursault's character admittedly belies itself as he evolves throughout the novel, but his actions are cold and detached none-the-less. His disrespect for life cannot be ignored......... no one can be sure that what had happened would never happen again........ I can read this today and say "give the man life in prison," but at the time this was written I would have supports the verdict and its ensuing punishment.
