Meursault's mother dies in the early chapters of the story. Meursault's insensitivity is really an expression of his existentialist ethos, "I probably did love Maman, but that didn't mean anything. At one time or another all normal people have wished their loved ones were dead." This is not something one expects from a grieving son. Meursault sees his mother's death as a fact of life as well as an extension of fleeting feelings that he claims all people feel.
