Meursault is his typical disinterested self when the magistrate meets and questions him for the first time. In fact, this is so much the case that the magistrate becomes quite angry and confused at the utter meaninglessness before him. Simply in order to avoid the annoying conversation, Meursault submits to the magistrate's various loud religious admonitions.
