Perhaps the most striking event of Part 2, Chapter 2 is Meursault's resignation to the life of a prisoner. In giving up thinking like a free man, he creates meaning for his life by looking forward to walks. For Camus, this is not unlike what people do in modern life. Without a real defined purpose for their lives, they must relegate themselves to the role of petty existence. But once it becomes habit, it is not necessarily so gloomy.
