The bottom line: Meursault is tried for not crying at his mother's funeral. I would think the judges and others see him as a stranger, a antichrist and a beast who lacks emotions, guilt, gratitute etc. He seems to be completely indifferent to social standards and his almost alien attitude may even post as a threat to others.
