Why is the following quote from Part 2, Chapter 1&2 important?

So I learned that even after a single day’s experience of the outside world a man could easily live a hundred years in prison. He’d have laid up enough memories never to be bored.”

In this quote, Camus is affirming that human life, which is measured within a limited span of time, is merely a simple value in the world of personal importance. The measurable length of Meursault’s life in prison affords him a conscious awareness of the one value he can acknowledge and comprehend with any certainty.... that of his own life.
