The Talented Mr. Ripley

“I’d rather be a fake somebody than a real nobody.” In the film The Talented Mr Rippely, directed by Anthony Manghella shows us extraordinary events that helps us deepen our understanding of the main protagonist and how he responds to them in the film. The first event starts of around the beginning of the film, where Tom gets offered a lot of money to fly to Italy and retrieve Mr Greenleaf’s errant and playboy son. Another event is when Tom and Dickie train to Rome and goes on a trip through the oceans. Another event is Tom and Fred, when Fred suspiciously starts questioning Tom for Dickie’s where about. Lastly, when Tom and Peter sail back to Rome. Through all these four events Anthony Manghella gives us a glimpse of what Tom Rippely’s true nature is by is responses.
The first event given to us is when the film opens with a mix-up of identities and a party at Manhattan. Tom Ripley, an improvised piano-tuner, gets mistaken for a wealthy Princeton blueblood. He lies and nods a long with Mr Greenleaf’s question when he asks him if he attended Princeton with is son Dickie Greenleaf. In this scene, a classical instrumental tune plays in the background and gives the audience a close up shot of Tom trying to think quickly but also trying to remain calm because of this mistaken identity. Believing Tom to be a collage is at the beginning, we are given a stark close up of Damon’s face. when Tom lies and says that he is an ex student and attended the same school as Dickie Greenleaf, Princeton Grad. we are given a stark close up
