Gender is a theme that resonates in this play. Patriarchal control was the norm in the 16th century. Shakespeare bends the rules a little because, while patriarchy prevails, women too have a part in setting the terms of gender relationships. Kate is no push over. By the time she has become the "obedient" wife, Petruchio has come to recognize that his "taming" of Kate is dependent on how much he respects her.
