What connection does Shakespeare establish between outward appearance and inner spirit? Do you think this is true? why or why not?

Shakespeare believes that the inner spirit is typical of what the outer appearance shows. Caliban is the perfect example, ugly on both the outside and the inside. I think such a lesson is taught in much literature, although there are often contrasts in such people as the Hunchback of Notre Dame who is beautiful inside when treated beautifully.
