In chapter forty-three, Mr. Huntingdon returns and immediately announces that he has hired a governess for their five-year-old son. Helen protests, but he refuses to change his mind. When the governess arrives, it is quickly evident to Helen that she is not a governess, but her husband's mistress. Outraged and concerned for her son's moral fiber, Helen again begins to plot her escape, writing to her brother to prepare Wildfell Hall.
