It is important to note that O'Brien recounts this story in first person. Unlike in “The Man I Killed", O'Brien writes a very sanitary and clinical about the experience. O'Brien's audience for this is his daughter Kathleen. He imagines how he might tell his daughter about his experience. He tells it in a very matter of fact way which allows O'Brien to separate himself from many of the emotionally charged themes in the book.
