Much of this section has to do with the effect on Vietnam on Mary Jane. The men initially sexualize her, there are not many women in this book, as the "girl next door" to a sort of killer. She is blurring the line of recognizable gender roles. She stops showering, covers her feminine long hair, and stops wearing makeup. She is transformed into a mannish figure and she enjoys the transformation. To some extent Vietnam has this affect on all the men. Their "feminine" characteristics are taken from them: they become something more aggressive.
