Why does he construct this elaborate(mostly fictional) relationship with her? What does he get out of it?

I assume you're referring to Jimmy Cross? If so, the relationship, real or imagined, was something that kept Jimmy Cross alive. Martha gave him a reason to live.... to go home. Thus, for him, Martha was a lifesaver.
