What are some emotions used in The Things They Carried? What is the significance of these emotions and who (in the book) does it affect?

We are currently finished reading this book by Tim O'Brien and are asked to write an essay using this prompt. I really need help with this as I am out of ideas. Since I am a sophomore, this is the first big essay that we write and I would apprieciate it if the ideas are specific!
