What might be the value of humor for combat soldiers in The Things They Carried? and In what very real way were each of them actors in The Things They Carried?

I think that humor during battle helps keep the soldiers holding their sanity. The stress of battle is just too great not to have humor. All of them must act the part of being "macho" or masculine under the threat of death. In reality they are all scared and vulnerable.
