why cant the novel be considered a memoi of author Tim O'Brien's war experiences as a soldier in Vietnam?

A memoir aims at re-telling experiences as they actually happened. The people in the memoir should reflect the actual people from the experiences. Rat and Kiowa and Mitchell Sanders aren't real people or even based on actual people. They are fragments of O'Brien's own war time experience conjured up to create a story that reflects the war experience.
