Chapter three of the time mechine
Wells build suspense by noting observations of the creatures and landmarks the TT finds upon landing. The architecture seems familiar, but the creatures don't seem as if they could live in their frail states. The TT knows nothing of how these creatures survive, and yet, he gages his responses by the creatures he sees. They exhibit no fear, thus, he abandons his machine to get closer.
