Why did T.C Boyle write the Tortilla Curtain?

In my opinion, Boyle's purpose for writing the novel was to illustrate the human side of illegal immigration, as opposed to the statistical side we are exposed to regularly. Boyle doesn't take a stance one way or the other, but he does succeed in providing us with intimate details that fuel our individual thoughts on the issue.
