What discrepancies does Holmes find in the account to conclude that they have been intentionally misled? (ring, candle, shotgun, timing etc.)

Holmes and a London detective, MacDonald travel to the house, but are puzzled by discrepancies at the crime scene. Apparently, someone has broken in, blown Douglas’s head clean off with a double-barrelled shotgun, and escaped through the open window and across the moat.
