in the court case of James Stanger Mrs. Larbey protects him like he's her son so what is she to James? a mother a sister or just a friend. A lot of confusion about this.

James Stanger is the newspaper editor critical of the Scowrers; McGinty orders him to be beaten just like he went after Mrs. lareby's husband. I think that is why she protects him.
