Why Mr Doughlas often said that i have been in the valley of fear. I am not out of it yet.?

He said that because when he was in Vermissa valley he betrayed the scowrers. When some of them like Baldwin were released by the police, they wanted to kill Mr. Douglas(McMurdo). That's why he always said that he wasn't out of the valley.
