Nobody knew what the iceberg was. The iceberg was on the photo that one of the Rosses took. It really looked like a dot on the horizon more than anything else. At one point in the book Taffler is described as "just a dot on the horizon, dots were anonymous". I think this speaks to the millions of men who died in the war. Their stories and lives were cut short rendering them anonymous to the world, much like the anonymous dot that was the iceberg.
