What does Mr. Alums mean when he says "Miss Henry and I would like to give you a demonstration of your own possibilities..."?

Mr. Alums asks Kenny to recite a passage for the older students.... to let them see how far they can go, and the importance of reading. Kenny's presence puts the older students on a kind of notice.... something they can and should be doing.
