What was going on in the South?

In 1963, the United States was in the midst of passing Civil Rights legislation. The South, however, did everything they could to stop this legislation. White citizens in the South continued to discriminate against blacks and adhere to strict rules of segregation. The South also experienced numerous instances of violence in protest of the legislation, which included the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church.
