Why was Brian drawn to The Wave?

Brian Ammon is the quarterback for the football team. He is intelligent and unmotivated, his grades at school are poor. Brian is attracted to the dicipline and clear social structure of the Wave. He finds purpose in the Wave, a purpose he did not find in football or at home.
