Gregers has returned to his home in order to avange his father's crimes against the Ekdal family. His intentions include unveiling the true nature of Hialmar's family life, exposing his wife's affair with his father, and questioning the true parentage of his son Werle. he feels that if Hialmar makes himself like the "wild" duck, he will raise himself into the "light of truth."

What gregers does in inexcusable; his vengeance goes far beyond what he attempts to mark as the enactment of "christian values." His preaching is likened to that of the anti-christ, and he is compared to Judas (the 13th at the table). Gregers actions bring ruin his friends as he insists on preaching and living the "ideal."

He's like the "loyal dog" he thinks he's doing right by showing Hialmar the truth when it's hard to tell if he can handle the truth.
