During the trial, Mr. and Mrs. Cruff present the copybook Kit gave to Prudence as proof that Kit is doing evil. Soon after, Nat enters the courtroom with Prudence, and they have come to give testimony on Kit's behalf. When Prudence takes the stand, she tells the court that Kit has taught her to read and write. They don't beloeve her at first, but Prudence proves it to them by reading perfectly from the Bible. Mrs. Cruff is angry, but Mr. Cruff is proud that his daughter can read. Because of Nat and Prudence's testimony, Kit is acquitted of all charges, and her life is saved.
