In spite of his intentions how does John end up at the husking bee with Judith?

Judith mistakes John's intentions and believes he wants to ask for her hand..... not Mercy's. All of the confusion and chaos leads John to accompany Judith.... he's stuck. He knows that if he embarrasses and shames Judith by telling the truth, Mercy will never forgive him.
