The words on Kingston's back are a list of grievances tattooed there by her parents; they are thoughts on revenge, and the revenge she will be seeking when she rides off. Think of them as a "to do" list."
Like Fa Mu Lan, Kingston takes on the role of woman warrior, something unheard of in Chinese tradition. They both don male clothing, and they both "lead" men. Both pretend for a time to be men, and both fight will their inner strength rather than physical strength.
