What does speaking American feminine mean to the narrator in SfaBRP

The term American-feminine is used throughout the book in order to describe actions alien to the narrator that were required for assimilation. American-feminine isn't a complement to American women...... it was a way she "had" to act. For example, on Page 172, speaking American-feminine is "whispering."
