Why does the narrators mother tell her the story of her aunt?

The narrator's mother shares the family history as a form of life lessons for her daughter. In my opinion, she felt the stories provided moral guidance and helped shaped her children's lives. Her stories were didactic and had an ulterior motive.... to warn her children about life.
