John is portrayed as a man who is caretaker of his wife rather than a partner. He freely embraces his role as superior to women. He embodies the patriarchal elitism over women in that era. As a physician, he sees women's emotions as trivial and "hysteric". The reader gets the sense that John is distant and ignorant of his wife's feelings and inner life. The wife./narrator is submissive to her husband but, being locked in the room, realizes her deep seated resentment of him.
