Do you think the narrator was mentally ill to begin with or did something else cause her to become mentally ill?

Im my opinion, the narrator was initially experiencing feelngs of sadness.... possibly a kind of worthlessness. We aren't apprised of her exact condition, although we know that Gilman herself suffered from depression. The treatment worsened her condition.
