The room is more like a prison. The windows of the room are barred, and there is a gate across the top of the stairs. The room itself is confining but the most specific attribute of the room is the yellow wallpaper. The wallpaper depicts the stages of the narrator's illness. As the narrator begins to unravel and panic, the wallpaper too changes with her. The narrator's anxieties are personified within the wallpaper and the room remains a prison,
