Yes, by the end of the story, her attitude has changed. She's slinking around their summerhouse like some sort neurotic ghost. As long as old Johnny boy is in the mix, I don't think she can get better. John is really a representation of the whole patriarchal system that existed then. A woman had to conform within the superficial parameters of feminine identity at the time of suffer complete loss of self.
